Killarney Co-Driver Myers Guides McShane to Top Ten 2WD Finish in Portugal

Killarney and District Motor Club member Niall Myers called the pacenotes for Donegal driver Oisin McShane over the weekend, helping secure an 18th place overall finish and eighth in the 2WD class at Rally da Água in Portugal.

The Irish pair tackled the two-day tarmac event in a PT Racing Peugeot 208 Rally4. After flying out on Monday, they completed a short pre-event test on Tuesday before conducting a two-day recce on Wednesday and Thursday to write notes for the fast Portuguese stages.

Following Friday night’s ceremonial start, Myers and McShane focused on logging stage kilometres and building pace in the unfamiliar Rally4 machine, bringing the car home without incident.

Co-driver Niall Myers was pleased with the mileage gained over the event:

“It was a fantastic event and a really valuable experience for both of us. We had plenty to learn with the car and the stages, but Oisin settled into the Peugeot really well and continued to build confidence throughout the rally. We got the competitive kilometres we wanted, learned a huge amount and brought the car home.”

At the finish ramp, driver Oisin McShane added:

“We’re absolutely delighted to get to the finish and come away with 18th overall. It was a big learning experience for both of us, particularly getting used to the Peugeot 208 Rally4 and the Portuguese stages.

“The car from PT Racing was brilliant and we became more comfortable with it as the rally went on. The roads were a completely different challenge to what we’re used to at home, and we’ve learned a huge amount from the experience.

“A massive thank you has to go to Kelly Motorsport Ltd, the Craig Breen Foundation and Motorsport Ireland for their support in helping make this opportunity possible. Thanks also to PT Racing, our families and everyone who supported and followed us from home. We really appreciate it.”

McShane, who was the first recipient of the Craig Breen Foundation award and made his tarmac debut in Wexford at age 16, now turns his attention back to domestic competition alongside Myers for the upcoming Laois Forest Rally.
