Behind the scenes: Pirelli’s strategy for the Sierra Morena season opener
The 2026 FIA European Rally Championship begins this weekend in Andalusia, where the Rally Sierra Morena provides a technical challenge for the 62 crews entered. As the reigning manufacturer champion, Pirelli enters the season providing the primary link between the cars and the demanding Spanish asphalt. With over 30 crews eligible for championship points, the management of the 203.80 timed kilometres is dictated largely by tyre choice and compound strategy.
The Spanish roads are known for high temperatures and abrasive surfaces, making the P Zero range the central focus for the top teams. Pirelli has supplied its hard compound (RA5C) and soft compound (RA7+) for the 13 special stages. The hard tyre is the standard choice for long loops where heat build-up threatens the structural integrity of the tread, while the soft compound offers the necessary bite for cooler morning runs or sections with lower grip levels. If the Andalusian weather breaks, the Cinturato RWD wet-weather tyre is kept in reserve to clear standing water.

Among the frontrunners relying on this technical data are Andrea Mabellini in the new Lancia Y HF and the Skoda Fabia RS pairings of Giandomenico Basso and Teemu Suninen. Strategic planning is constrained by strict allocation rules. Drivers in the RC2, RC3, and RGT classes are limited to 16 tyres for the duration of the event. Those in the RC4, RC5, and RC6 categories must manage their pace with just 12 tyres. For teams participating in the Qualifying stage, every tyre used is deducted from their total rally allowance, though Free Practice and Shakedown runs are exempt from this count.
Pirelli also operates as the sole supplier for the M-Sport Fiesta Rally3 Trophy, which starts its third season this weekend with 11 entrants. In this category, the technical support focuses on providing a consistent platform for developing talent on varying asphalt grades. Success in Cordoba depends on how well these crews can balance the aggressive nature of the Sierra Morena stages against their limited rubber allocation before the final podium on Sunday.
