Two Kerry riders in contention for Superbike Cup championship honours
The race for the Superbike Cup category of the Dunlop Masters Irish Superbike Championship is shaping up to be a close-run affair and there are two Kerrymen in the top three after the opening nine races.
After last weekend’s triple-header at Mondello Park, Tralee’s Evan O’Grady continues to lead the category but Cavan’s Shane Connolly has now won six races in a row.
Evan has two wins to his name from the opening meeting and managed a brace of third places last weekend.
He holds a 21-point advantage over Connolly with two meetings and six races left to run this season.
Dean O’Grady from Ballyduff holds third place. He is just one point behind Connolly after his best weekend of the season. He finished second on three occasions last weekend.
“None of the three of us can afford a non-finish at this stage of the season,” said Evan.
Dean was very lucky not to be among the list of retirements on Sunday. During the early morning warm-up session the drive sprocket on his Kawasaki Superbike disintegrated.
In a second stroke of luck, the first Superbike race of the day was not until after lunch, so he had plenty of time to replace the damaged component.
All three are likely to be promoted to the Pro rankings at the end of the season, adding extra incentive to go into next year as Cup champion.
