Creighton targets strong performance as ERC resumes in Italy

Motorsport Ireland Rally Academy driver William Creighton aims to reignite his FIA European Rally Championship campaign this weekend at Rally di Roma Capitale, running from July 3rd to 5th.

Following a outing on the fast gravel roads of the Royal Rally of Scandinavia, Creighton and co-driver Liam Regan return to asphalt. The surface yielded a seventh-place finish at the ERC season opener in Spain earlier this year.

The Italian event marks the next step in Creighton’s first full European campaign aboard his TRT Racing Team-run, Michelin-backed Citroën C3 Rally2. The crew hopes to build on the asphalt pace they demonstrated earlier in the season.

This year’s edition features a redesigned route with ceremonial elements in the heart of Rome, alongside new special stages. High summer temperatures are also expected to test cars and competitors across the asphalt event.

The rally holds significance for Creighton, who first competed here in 2020 in the ERC3 category using Rally4 machinery. Six years later, the reigning British Rally Champion returns in Rally2 equipment to face a competitive entry list.

“I’m looking forward to switching back to tarmac,” said Creighton. “We found a nice rhythm at the first tarmac round of the year, so hopefully we can use that experience heading into our test day in Rome and carry that into the rally. The entry list is packed with European and local drivers, so the competition will be intense. It’s going to be a demanding event with new stages to write pacenotes for, so there’s plenty to prepare for.”

“Rally di Roma Capitale was my first proper European rally back in 2020, so it’s special to return now in a Rally2 car and see how much has changed. Liam and I will do our best to have a successful rally.”
