THE BATTLE FOR THE KINGDOM BEGINS IN KILLARNEY

The quest to be crowned the best in the county officially kicks off this weekend as the Moriarty’s Central Car Sales Kingdom of Kerry Rally Championship enters its latest season.

Established in 2018 by Sean and Mike Moriarty, the series remains the only dedicated county-specific rally championship in Ireland.

The stakes are high but the requirements are simple: to be eligible for points, a contender must hold a County Kerry address on their competition license and be a member of either Killarney and District Motor Club (KDMC) or Kerry Motor Club (KMC).

THE PRIZE: MORE THAN JUST MEDALS

While the winners receive the prestigious county medals, the real incentive is the financial boost to the following season.

The overall champion receives a free entry to a Kerry-based rally the following year. Last year’s victor, Rob Duggan, will be utilising his prize for a free entry into the Kerry Summer Rally on July 5.

This year’s 2026 champion will secure a free entry to a KDMC event in 2027.

The championship traditional prize-giving ceremony, always a highlight of the local motorsport social calendar, will take place during the festive period between Christmas and New Year.

THE ROAD TO THE 2026 TITLE

The 2026 calendar is a sprint across the county’s most iconic stages:

  • Rounds 1 & 2: The Rally of the Lakes (This Weekend)
  • Round 3: The Kerry Summer Rally (July 5)
  • The Decider: The Killarney Historic Rally (November), which this year celebrates its 30th Anniversary.

2025 SEASON REVIEW: DUGGAN TAKES THE TIE-BREAK

The 2025 season provided one of the closest finishes in the championship’s history, with the title decided only at the final round in December. Rob Duggan was officially confirmed as the champion at the county awards night in Keel after a season-long battle with Colin O’Donoghue.

The pair ended the championship level on 31 points. However, Duggan secured the title on a tie-break, courtesy of his two class wins during the Rally of the Lakes. O’Donoghue finished as the runner-up despite a dominant performance in the modified section of the Killarney Historic Rally, with Alan Ring claiming third overall.

Other 2025 honors included:

  • Historic Champion: Fergus O’Meara
  • Ladies’ Champion: Michelle Hickey

As the cars leave the start ramp in Killarney this morning, the hunt for the 2026 medals is officially on.
