roundabouts set for repair following motorcycle club safety concerns

A number of roundabouts across the Kerry road network are slated for urgent repair after motorcycle clubs raised serious concerns regarding surface safety.
The issue was brought to the floor of last week’s Kerry County Council meeting by Councillor Johnny Healy-Rae. He submitted a motion calling for a comprehensive survey of all roundabout surfaces throughout the county, noting that local biking groups had flagged deteriorating conditions as a significant hazard for two-wheeled road users.
In response to the motion, council officials confirmed that the majority of roundabouts in the county fall under the National Road Network. They stated that Kerry County Council, working alongside Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII), has already carried out surveys of the network.
These inspections have successfully identified several junctions that require immediate attention. Officials revealed that up to five roundabouts located on the N71 and N22 routes have been included in this year’s official programme of works.
Further locations have also been earmarked for surface restoration, with repairs scheduled for later in 2026 or as part of the 2027 works cycle. The move has been welcomed by the motorcycling community, as poor road surfaces on roundabouts—such as loose chippings, oil spills, or uneven tarmac—pose a disproportionate risk to bikers compared to other motorists.
The council indicated that they will continue to monitor the national routes in conjunction with TII to ensure that the most high-risk surfaces are prioritised for renewal.
