One Kerry driver’s perfect reason for entering the Ballyfinnane Hillclimb

If you are involved in Kerry motorsport, then you have to know John Hickey.

He has been around the sport for over four decades and has started almost all of the 42 Rally of the Lakes ran to date.

He has rallied every make of car conceivable, Talbot Sunbeam, Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza, and even an ex-Carlos Sainz Toyota Celica ST165.

He is probably best known for various forms of Ford Escorts and his most famous creation is the Fubaru, the Ford Escort Mk2 with Impreza four-wheel-drive running gear.

It is an engineering work of art.

The Fubaru is one of the many local cars getting ready for the Brian O’Neill Garden Equipment and Trailers Ballyfinnane Festival of Speed.

It spent much of this week on a roiling road where up to 400bhp was recorded.

It will be a special sIGHT on the hill next Sunday.

John has a very good reason for entering the event.

As only he could say it: “A sure we have to support this historic event. In 100 years’ time they will be looking at photos of us, as we are now amazed with the Rolls Royce story.”
