Respect as Breen pays tribute to “one of our own” Eoin McCarthy

Craig Breen is a leader and he displayed that great quality in Umea, Sweden on Thursday night.

Not alone is the team leader at M-Sport Ford, he is also the head statesman for the ten Irish competitors who are contesting the second round of the World Rally Championship.

As the Irish rally community comes to terms with the tragic loss of Eoin McCarthy during last Sunday’s Killarney Forestry Rally, the Waterford ace spoke on the start-ramp of the Umea-based rally.

He spoke for the Irish contingent in Sweden and for the entire community at home in Ireland

“This weekend is a bit difficult for us as a group, the Irish rally community,” he said “We lost one of our own at a rally in Ireland, young Eoin McCarthy –  just 22 years old –  just an absolute tragedy. We plough on this weekend with his family and friends in our mind. Let’s try and big a good result for him.”

Earlier in the day, Breen said: “He was only 22, and just getting started in the sport. At that level, it’s all about pure fun and pure enjoyment, so for it to end that way is just such a tragedy. My heartfelt condolences go to Eoin’s family and friends.”

Eoin was laid to rest today following Requiem Mass in St. Mary’s Church, Rossmore in his native West Cork.
