End of an era for motorsport fans passing through Newcastle West as Dee family move on from West End Filling Station

The West End service station in Newcastle West is one of those known rally houses where motorsport fans travelling to and from Kerry would stop off.

Run by the Dee family, Sharon, her brother David and his wife Rita, the filling station and food-store served rally fans for 36 years.

David and Rita are well known in rally circles and, over the years they have competed on most Kerry rallies in their Austin Mini.

Fans up the country heading to Tralee or Killarney would always stop off there to pick up their rally programmes.

Kerry motorsport people returning home from events on Sunday evenings would also make a point of stopping off there for the last cup of coffee or for a top up of fuel.

All that changed last month, when the Dee family handed the station over to the Circle K group.

“After a very successful 36years in business we have made the decision to lease our business to the management of Circle K,” said Sharon.

“We have very much enjoyed growing our business since we first opened our doors 36 years ago in 1985. It has been a pleasure for us to have served you all these years. We have formed many friendships, which we will be forever grateful for.

David said he hoped the new team at West End would continue to sell rally programmes in the future. He also thanked the rally family for their loyalty over the years.

“Even Sharon got to know the rally people over the years,” he said. “With me and Rita involved in rallying it was good for the business and I would like to thank our motorsport friends for the support over the years.”

Circle K officially took over the site on November 25.

“The new site is a significant addition to Circle K’s network of service stations in Ireland. Situated on the N21 Limerick to Kerry Road, the new service station will cater for significant volumes of people travelling on this route daily,” said a company spokesperson.

The opening of Circle K Newcastle West brings the total of Circle K’s company owned stores to 170 nationwide.
