“We are not here to bake a cake” – O’Connell wins Western Australia Clubman’s Cup championship
Perth-based Kenmare co-driver Murish O’Connell has won the Western Australia Clubman’s Rally Championship.
He and his driver Glenn Cawood won their class (and the championship) by 0.6 seconds on Saturday’s Experts Cup Rally.
The Mitsubishi Lancer crew made up for last year when their car caught fire on the last round and ended their hopes of lifting the title.
“It’s great to get the championship win after late disappointment last year,” O’Connell told Kerry Motorsport News.
“We were in a strong position starting the Experts Cup, but a delayed start meant we were on cold tyres and then an off-road excursion on only the third corner.
“A section of the exhaust had come loose and was causing a lot of vibration, but was all sorted in the next service. “
Cawood is originally from Zimbabwe.
“The Zimbabwean lads in the crew have been using a great expression all season – ‘We are not here to bake a cake’ -so on the very next stage we were flat out, like a badger on a bypass, and took the lead.”
They set a good time on the final stage and despite a good effort from main rival Tom Van Kann they took the win by just 0.6 of a second.
“We are delighted to finish the season on a high, with another win, and now join the list of Clubman Cup winners,” added O’Connell
“Thanks to all our kind sponsors for their support, our service crew, in particular Brendan Long and Craig Ferreira for their hard work and good humour, and family, friends, officials and volunteers for putting up with us all year,”
“If you’ve ever thought of going rallying, I cannot recommend it enough – It’s more craic than you could even imagine.”
