Kerry Motor Club’s Maurice McElligott is doing his bit to encourage youngsters into motorsport.
On Sunday last the Causeway man entered East Cork Hot Rod Club’s sprint in Watergrasshill.
He also entered his son Dean, 16 and Dean’s best friend Cillian Murphy in the event and all three of them shared a Nissan Micra, suitable for both adults and teenagers, in the sprint.
And while there is a competitive element to the sprint, Maurice, who is an experienced rally driver and co-driver, was looking at the big picture.
“It is all about getting the young lads involved in motorsport,” he said, “It was lovely to see 20-odd juniors there on Sunday, ranging from 10 to 16-years old, both boys and girls.”
It was good day out for all three of them. Maurice was third in the adult class he was entered in. The two youngsters raced in the Junior class with Dean taking second and Cillian third ensuring all three of them went home with a trophy.
However, Maurice needs to watch his back, his son was only 0.77 of a second behind him on combined overall times!
