Craig Breen and Paul Nagle are chasing a fulltime drive in the World Rally Championship next year and a result in this weekend’s Ypres Rally could help their cause.

The Killarney man and his Waterford driver are on a parttime programme with Hyundai Motorsport this year and share a third Hyundai i20 Coupe with Spanish driver Dani Sordo.

They are contesting this weekend’s Ypres Rally Belgium for the Germany-based team as part of that rotation deal.

However, both Breen and Nagle are chasing a fulltime seat next year.

Their second place on last month’s Rally Estonia strengthened their bargaining power with their current employer.

They are also linked to another team for the 2022 season.

The last time that the Ypres Rally ran, as a Belgium championship round in 2019, Breen and Nagle were convincing winners driving a Volkswagen Polo R5.

Another win on this weekend’s rally could seal their fate for next season but neither Breen nor Nagle are saying much other than concentrating on the task ahead this weekend.

“Ypres is one of the events I really like the most. I’ve been lucky enough to do it quite a few times across my career, and last time I was there in 2019 we managed to win the rally. It’s definitely one of the most interesting and specialised rallies you’ll ever do. On paper, it seems to be a strange profile of event but when you are in the car it is an amazing challenge. At pretty much every junction, the surface is a little bit different; it’s an event I really look forward to and it’s a rally worthy of World Rally Championship status,” said Breen.

This weekend’s Ypres Rally Belgium will be Nagle’s 89th start at World level. A full season next year will take him over the magic 100.
