Andrew Murphy went up to Down

Andrew Murphy contested Saturday’s third round of the Ulster Superbike Championship as a high-speed test session for the next round of the Dunlop Masters.

Mountcollins-based Murphy is a frontrunner in the Dunlop Masters Supersport class on his Yamaha.

He finished third on two occasions during the July  triple-header meeting at Mondello Park but is anxious to get his first win of the season at the end of this season.

He made the last-minute decision to enter last weekend’s Temple Motorcycle Races at Bishopscourt, County Down to get more seat time.

A bad qualifying session, in the pour rain, put him on the backfoot for much of the day.

However, he took eighth place in his opening race and went two places better in his second event.

“I finished up the last race in sixth from 19th on the grid. It was a very wet race and it was cut short to six [from eight] laps,” he said. “I’m happy to have made those positions up after getting off to a bad start with qualifying in the morning. The weather definitely didn’t go our way, but it was great to get some seat time in before the next Masters’ weekend.”

The third race weekend of the five round Dunlop Masters takes place at Mondello Park on August 28 and 29.
