Well-known motorcycle race mechanic Der Rahilly was on the spanners for road racing frontrunner Michael Sweeney at last weekend’s Armoy Road Races.
Despite years working as a race mechanic, particularly with local racers Emmet and Evan O’Grady at short circuit events, this was his first time working as a road race mechanic.
“This is a different level altogether compared to the tracks,” he said.
Sweeney, the current leader of the Dunlop Masters Irish Superbike Championship at Mondello Park, was an expected frontrunner in his three races.
The Skerries-based rider finished fourth in each of his Superbike races on his BMW 1000RR but a gearbox problem on his Kawasaki ruled him out of contention in his Super Twin race.
