Snetterton Race 01 & 02
Drama Filled Opening Weekend for JTR
Lorcan Hanafin’s second race weekend of the 2021 Porsche Carrera Cup series takes place at Brands Hatch this weekend
His team, Joe Tandy Racing back on the opening weekend of the championship- held at Snetterton two weeks ago.
Finally, after another delayed start to the series, the opening weekend of the fastest one make series in the UK, the Porsche Carrera Cup GB got underway at the Norfolk circuit of Snetterton.
Lorcan showed he had the pace on the official test day held twp days previous, qualifying was the same, he lit up the timing screens to put down a marker, going purple in all 3 sectors to set 1:51.023 on his 5th lap, 0.311 second ahead of former champion Dan Cammish, Jamie started well with a 1:51.916going 8th, but then on lap 6 bettered that going 6th with 1:51.569. With 11 minutes of the session remaining both drivers left the pit lane to have another crack, straight from the off Lorcan posted a 1:50.459 purple sectors in 1 & 2 and a personal best in the 3rd, then on his next lap he went even faster and posted a new lap record with a sub 1:50 (1:49.947) and the first driver to go under 1:50 & Pole Position, Jamie was still 6th but again bettered his time to a 1:50.957.
Last year’s champion Harry King had a problem and pulled off the circuit this causing yellow flags in that sector and putting an end to the qualifying session, it would mean that Lorcan had his first Pole Position in the Porsche Carrera Cup GB and his first for JTR, Jamie would finish 10th he would lose a lap & his time due to track limits, moving him to 9th on the grid for race one in the PRO class.
On a bright dry track race 1 got underway with Lorcan getting a great start, Dan Cammish got bogged down to Lorcan’s advantage and setting him free to race away, as in qualifying he showed the pace and traded fastest laps with Cammish for a number of laps but on lap 5 he set the fastest lap of 1:51.984 to extend his lead and out of site and still posting fast times, again lap 6 1:51.889 moving him 1.597 secs ahead of Cammish in 2nd spot. Halfway point of the race Lorcan leads Cammish while King is now 3rd, lap 9 Lorcan extends his lead to nearly 2 seconds and posts another fastest lap 1:51.797, Jamie is still holding is own in 9th. With 4 laps remaining his lead is now 2.5 seconds and this is how it would stay until the chequered flag, Lorcan wins with Jamie finishing 9th. This though would not be the end of the story sadly the Lorcan’s first win would not stand has the stewards deemed that Lorcan had jumped the start and thus gave him a 10 second penalty demoting him to third and deigning him of the win which would have been JTR’s 100 win, a devasting blow to the team and Lorcan.
Race 2 saw the usual reverse grid with Lorcan starting from 3rd and Jamie 9th on the grid, with a track temperature of 36’c and air temp 25’c the lights went out and both Lorcan and Jamie got away well, but Lorcan would lose a lace to 5th but Jamie gained a spot to 8th before the first lap was completed, again as in race 1 Lorcan was battling with Cammish, but Lorcan would lose out and slipped down to 7th on the 2nd lap but he wouldn’t let Cammish get away and tried to put the pressure on, it was a 4 car battle for 4th, 5th, 6th & 7th, Jamie is still 8th again holding his own and his patience pays off by moving up another spot to 7th on lap 7 just behind his team mate Lorcan in 6th, this is how it would stay until the final lap when Lorcan moves up to 5th with Jamie still in 7th.
It was an unlucky weekend for drivers and the team, but the pace is there for everyone to see, bring on Brands Hatch.
