O’Donoghue wins on debut motorcycle off-road race

Colin O’Donoghue made the best possible start to his motorcycle racing career by winning the Expert Class in the opening round of the Pro-Ride Enduro Championship on Sunday.

Better known for his skills behind the wheel of a rally car – he won the modified section of the 2019 Killarney Historic Rally – the Killarney man made the switch to two-wheeled competition at the Todd’s Leap off-road complex in County Tyrone.

“I was very surprised, to be honest, I did a training ride two days before and I thought I wasn’t fit enough for this, I was thinking of dropping down a class but I had entered the expert class and decided I wasn’t backing out,” he said.

The KTM 300 EXC rider completed the 36km race in a time of 2hours and 40minutes and had to contend with a range of obstacles including river crossings, rock beds and fallen logs.

The next round of the championship is scheduled for the Tinker’s Hill venue near Newry, County Down, on June 26.

“I think I will commit to the championship,” he added, “I will definitely go to Tinker’s Hill and see from there. It was a well-run event on Sunday. I would like to thank my pit crew Senie Gorman and Daniel McBride for their help.”

Fellow Kerry rider Niall Gunn got a great start and led the event early on but the KTM 250 rider crashed out later in the day.
