Kerry competitors react as first rally sprint event of the year gets cancelled due to lack of entries

A Kerry-based rally team operator and other Kerry competitors say they cannot understand why a rally-sprint event scheduled for Mondello Park has been cancelled.

The 2021 Suirway Group Rallysprint Championship was due to start this weekend at Mondello Park, but the circuit announced on Tuesday morning that this, the opening round, has been postponed.

It should have been the first rally-style event in Ireland since March 2020 and was listed as one of the ‘gated’ events that could go ahead under current Motorsport Ireland guidelines.

“Despite attracting strong entries in 2020, before being cancelled due to Covid restrictions, there were simply not enough entries this time round to run the event, This is in complete contrast to the Motor Racing season, which, under the new ICCR (Irish Championship Circuit Racing) guise, started last weekend, with strong support and big grids,” said an event statement.

Carragh Lake based Coin Fisher runs RallyFish, a company that offers arrive and drive packages to competitors at the wheel of either his Ford Fiesta or Citroen C2 rally cars. He also runs Ireland’s only motorsport themed raffle website

and only a few weeks ago gave one lucky punter (pictured below) an opportunity to drive a rally car at a test event at Mondello Park.

He had a number of customers lined up for this weekend’s event despite being unable to source pre-event information.

“We were contacted from a number of competitors that had issues trying to get information and details on the format, distance and regulations, also the very limited time to round one and a few had issues with the price,” said Fisher.

“Despite this it seems very strange that after such a long period without rallying, that the championship could not get the numbers, Is this all related to the current issues between competitors and Motorsport Ireland?”

The event was advertised on several motorsport websites and was priced at €210 for “several runs” over Mondello Park’s7km rallysprint course.

Another well-known local co-driver echoed these thoughts on pre-event information.

“I couldn’t find the online entry for this last week, so I emailed Mondello asking for it and got no reply,” he said. “Heard it maybe because of dual occupancy? Rallysprints are a dual event?”

Mondello Park’s Roddy Greene said: “It’s disappointing for sure. Interest was so strong last year, but if we don’t get the numbers, it is just not viable to run the event. If there is an appetite for the round to be rescheduled, we would be happy to do that.”
