Michael Fassbender’s two teammates are confident that the team can score a podium finish in a future round of the European Le Mans Series.
The Team Proton Competition drivers were reacting to their sixth place finish on Sunday’s ELMS season opener.
The crew were holding fourth place overall until Fassbender’s stint was disrupted by another driver. He was clipped by the JMW Motorsport Ferrari of Andrea Fontana and spun at Turn 10. Fontana was given a black and white warning but the 93 Porsche dropped two places as a consequence.
“That was just the beginning of a season in which a lot can still happen. I am sure that we will continue to develop and that we will end up on the podium at some point,” said German driver Felilpe Laser.
His Austrian teammate Richard Lietz added: “At times we were doing very well in the race and were even able to hope for a podium. In the end it wasn’t quite enough. Nevertheless, it was a start to the season that made us confident.”
Fassbender himself admitted to being frustrated by progress but believes that the breakthrough he needs is not far away.
“Barcelona with the 911 RSR was an interesting experience. I think we are on the right track. At some point the knot just has to burst,” he said.
The next round takes place at the Red Bull Ring in Austria on the weekend of May 14 and 15.
