Killarney men honoured by London motor club
Two Killarney men were honoured by the London Irish Motor Club at the club’s annual awards presentation on Saturday night last.
John F O’Mahony, from Muckross was named as the club’s person of the year. He took over the role of club secretary earlier this year and was given the club’s biggest award in recognition of his tireless work behind the scenes.
Shane Buckley, from Rockfield, Faha was named as the club’s international co-driver of the year. He scored some amazing results this year in what was supposed to be a quite season.
In April he finished third overall on The Circuit of Kerry alongside Welsh visitor Tomas Davies, a result which also earned the Ford Escort Mk2 crew the London Irish Motor Club trophy which is awarded to be best overseas crew on that rally. #
A month later he was back on home soil again, guiding his cousin Aidan Buckley to an impressive eighth overall in the national section of The Rally of the Lakes in what was their first outing in Aidan’s newly built Escort.
The same crew finished sixth overall in the modified section of last month’s Killarney Historic Rally.
Buckley also co-drove for Phil Collins and Ian Davies during the season. Along with his regular driver, Daniel Cronin, they led the Cork ‘20’ International Rally after day one but retired early on Sunday morning.
The awards were presented by club chairman Mick Smith from Killarney.
