Juniors impress in Laois Forest Rally

Killarney and District Motor Club’s emerging rally stars delivered strong performances at last weekend’s Laois Forest Rally, the final round of the Motorsport Ireland Junior Rally Series Junior 1000 category.
James Spillane emerged as the top Kerry performer. Accompanied by stand-in co-driver Dean McElligott, Spillane drove an impressive rally.
After opening the event in fourth place on stage one, Spillane posted impressive times over the second and third tests to leapfrog into second overall in the category. He held off late-stage charges to secure a brilliant second-place finish in J1000.
Fellow Killarney and District Motor Club driver Frank Wharton was locked in an intense, second-by-second duel for the podium spots throughout the day. Wharton held second place early on before dropping to fifth following stage three. He fought back on stage four with the third-fastest time but his battle ended in heartbreak on the final stage when his Volkswagen Up was forced into retirement with engine trouble.
In Class 2A, Killarney co-driver Niall Myers enjoyed another competitive outing alongside James McShea. Navigating Oisin McShane to tenth overall and second in class. McShane’s hopes of a win ended on the final test when an off-road moment cost him ten seconds
Following their success in Laois, McShea and Myers remain firmly in contention for the Class 2A championship title as attention turns to this weekend’s Harvest Rally
