Success for Killarney drag racer
Killarney resident Vule Peuraca is making a name for himself in motorcycle drag racing, a sport where riders accelerate down a straight track from a standing start to record the fastest time.
Originally from Croatia, the 32-year-old moved to Ireland nine years ago and works at Killarney Tyre Centre.
Riding a 2007 Suzuki GSX-R 750, Peuraca is Kerry’s only regular motorcycle drag racer, and one of just a few motorcycle racers left in the county, down from a peak of around 30 riders just five years ago.
High insurance costs have heavily restricted venues nationwide. Competitors now rely on events run on closed public roads by the West Cork Motorcycle Club, which returned this season after a three-year break, as well as Northern Ireland venues like Enniskillen Airport, which hosted Race Wars last month.
Despite the challenges, Peuraca has enjoyed a trophy-filled season in the 750cc class. On June 14, he took victory in Class C at the West Cork MCC Drag Race. He followed up with a double class win at the Race Wars event in Enniskillen on July 25 and 26.
Peuraca self-funds his racing with support from his family and local sponsors, including Killarney Tyre Centre, Gleneagle VIP Barber Shop, and DOS Motors. He hopes to see the sport grow locally and would love to see a drag racing event held in Killarney in the future.
