Ring targets European Historic points at Ulster Rally
Alan Ring leads a small Kerry contingent heading north for the 50th Modern Tyres Ulster Rally this weekend.
The two-day, Ballymena-based event marks the first time the rally hosts a round of the FIA European Historic Rally Championship (EHRC) for pre-2000 cars. It is also a round of the NAPA Auto Parts Irish Tarmac Rally Championship, with crews tackling iconic stages such as Torr Head, Glendun, and Cairncastle.
For Ring, the rally presents a clear opportunity in his partial European campaign.
Driving his Subaru Impreza in the Pre-2000 Category 5 class, the O’Donoghue Ring Collection driver currently holds fourth place in the EHRC standings on 25 points, following a third-place finish in Spain in March.
None of Ring’s main continental rivals, standings leader Daniel Alonso Villaron (70pts), second-placed Arnold Van Der Smeede (51pts), or third-placed “Pedro” (28pts), are competing in Antrim. With only two rounds remaining in Italy after Ulster, a strong finish could propel Ring into second place overall in the European title chase.
Meanwhile, Currow co-driver John Jo McCarthy is also making the trip north. McCarthy will navigate for Banbridge driver John Devlin in a Ford Escort Mk2, running as car 21 in Class 6.
