Gardaí and PSNI launch major cross-border road safety operation for Donegal Rally

An Garda Síochána and the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) have launched their joint cross-border traffic management plan ahead of this weekend’s Donegal International Rally.

The safety operation was officially launched on Tuesday at the Lifford Bridge border crossing. Additional resources will be deployed on both sides of the border from Friday, June 19th to Sunday, June 21st, to manage the high volumes of traffic expected for the event.

Police presence will be significantly increased with extra checkpoints, high-visibility patrols, marked and unmarked vehicles, Garda motorcyclists, and the Garda Air Support Unit.

Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan of the Donegal Garda Division confirmed it is a 24/7 operation targeting speeding, mobile phone use, non-wearing of seatbelts, and drug or drink-driving. Defective vehicles will be seized immediately.

“This is the biggest event of the year in Donegal,” Chief Superintendent Sheridan said. “Come to the county, enjoy yourselves, respect competitors, respect road users, respect the communities and Keep the Race in its Place.”

Both police services are urging the public to report dangerous driving by providing vehicle registration details or dashcam footage.

PSNI Chief Inspector Ian Ferriby added that the Roads Policing Unit will be active with checkpoints and speed traps on all approaches to the border crossing points.

“The message we’re trying to put out here is to leave the racing to the rally drivers,” Chief Inspector Ferriby said. “Everybody attend — have a great time. Watch the Donegal Rally, but don’t be speeding.”

Spectators are advised to plan journeys early, expect public transport disruptions due to road closures, follow marshal guidance, and watch only from designated safe viewing areas.
