Positivity and progress as Anthony O’Carroll targets summer road race visit in summer – Friends to run Cork City Marathon on Saturday to raise funds

Ballyduff road racer Anthony O’Carroll continues to make hard-fought progress in his recovery, with plans currently underway for him to make a welcome return to the paddocks as a spectator later this summer.

O’Carroll has been receiving intensive treatment at a private rehabilitation centre in Brampton, County Galway, following his serious accident at the Southern 100 in July 2024. His daily routine remains highly demanding, revolving around consistent physiotherapy, speech and language therapy, and occupational therapy sessions.

The recovery journey has reached a point where his family and friends are looking toward significant milestones. If everything goes according to plan, the goal is to bring Anthony to visit the Skerries Road Races in July, followed by a highly anticipated trip to see the Athea Road Races in September. Being back among the bikes, the riders, and the unique road racing atmosphere as a visitor will mark a major step forward for the Kerry native.

Before those summer visits, a massive show of support will take place this coming weekend at the Cork City Marathon on May 31st. A group of Anthony’s close friends are set to lace up their running shoes to take on the marathon distance, raising vital funds to support his ongoing, long-term rehabilitation costs.

On the medical front, his recovery has seen several practical developments. His therapy team recently shifted their immediate focus to standing work and gluteal strengthening to build a stronger foundation after his right leg began turning from the hip and ankle, temporarily pausing his standard walking programme. He is also awaiting the arrival of new support boots and a customised hand splint from specialists in Oranmore to improve his comfort and positioning.

Significantly, Anthony has spent the last six weeks taking all of his medication and fluids orally without any chest complications, meaning his PEG feeding tube is on track for permanent removal. While he continues to manage post-traumatic headaches and changes to his teeth alignment resulting from his jaw healing, he is communicating clearly with doctors, his family, and his mother, who continues to manage his daily care routine in Galway.

Every step of Anthony’s recovery remains a testament to his resilience, aided by the ongoing prayers, messages, and financial backing from the wider motorsport community.
