The Killarney and District Motor Club hosted the return of the Autism Friendly “Quiet Hour” last Friday, May 1, following the initiative’s massive success in previous years.
The session took place at the Lewis Road Car Park and was designed to ensure the excitement of the Assess Ireland Rally of the Lakes remained accessible to every member of the community.
Running ahead of the main ceremonial parade, the special hour allowed autistic individuals and their families to get up close to the rally cars and meet the drivers in a calm, controlled environment. All engines remained switched off and revving was strictly prohibited to eliminate loud noises that can often be overwhelming for those with sensory sensitivities.
Representatives from Autism Friendly Killarney joined Clerk of the Course Tim Clifford to oversee the event, highlighting the ongoing importance of inclusivity within the sport. By providing this sensory-friendly space, the club ensured that every fan could experience the magic of the rally safely and comfortably.
