Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage members visit Spike Island

The Killarney Valley Classic and Vintage Club travelled to County Cork on Sunday, April 26, for a day trip focused on maritime history and heritage.

A group of over 20 members gathered at the club shed on Upper Lewis Road at 8am before departing for Cobh. The convoy included a range of well-maintained vehicles, from MG roadsters to classic 1990s Mercedes and a 1980s Volkswagen Scirocco.
Before boarding the ferry, a small number of members visited the Titanic Experience, located in the original White Star Line Ticket Office. The main group then crossed to Spike Island for a comprehensive guided tour.
The tour was led by knowledgeable guides who detailed the island’s transition from a 6th-century monastery to a high-security prison. Members visited the punishment blocks and the cell once occupied by the notorious figure “The General,” Martin Cahill. The guides also outlined the history of the 1985 prison riot and the island’s botanical and maritime significance.
The day provided members with a look at Ireland’s penal and military history before the return journey to Killarney. The event was well-supported and marks another successful outing for the club this season.
