All newcomers must go through extensive training before they are allowed to compete on the world-famous TT track.

The first of several training sessions took place on the island last weekend.

Murphy and Crean were given first-hand guidance by former TT racers and safety marshals.

The training included classroom sessions and practical lessons out on the track itself.

They also did laps of the tracks in cars with some experienced Isle of Man racers who showed them things like ideal braking spots and road positioning.

“Saturday, we arrived and did an introductory briefing and we were all put into groups and taken out for laps with the trainers who are ex-racers and travelling marshals,” said Murphy.

“I went out with John Barton first for two laps on Saturday morning. He has 30 years of experience racing around the TT course.

It was a great introduction to the circuit with him, he pointed out a lot of the danger spots and where we need to be on the road.”

Marshals briefed the two local racers on what they would need to be looking for out on the track from a safety point of view.

“I then went out with Derran Slous, he is a current travelling marshal and he also went through what we need to look out for on the circuit. We did three laps with him. We got back at 5 pm and did two hours in the classroom with [former TT racer] Milky Quayle going over onboard footage on the screen on every corner of the circuit. He showed us where we needed to be on the road, brake markers, tip-in points and apexes.”

“It was really interesting and a lot to take in. Sunday,  we did more laps with Johnny Heginbotham, a current travelling marshal and Dave Mygdal, a current racer with a lot of years of racing on the island. It was great to get input from a lot of experienced coaches, we Learned so much in a short weekend.”
