Killarney and District Motor Club launch four-car youth rally team

Killarney and District Motor Club will field a four-car team in this year’s Junior 1000 Rally Series.

The championship, limited to 1000cc rally cars, for 14- to 17-year-olds runs alongside the Sligo Pallets Forestry Rally Championship.
Now in its third season, the controlled series gives young drivers their first taste of rallying – one of the key rules is they must have a very experienced co-driver on board who drives on the road sections.

The opening round is the February 18 Killarney Forestry Rally in 2024 which is based in Castleisland.
Killarney and District Motor Club launched the event at the River Island Hotel on Saturday last.
The four-car team was unveiled at the launch and will operate under the KDMC2 Youth Academy programme, which was started last year.
The four drivers are, Dave Slattery Jr (Hyundai i10), Frank Wharton (Toyota Aygo), Sean White (Peugeot 107) and Morgan Moore (Skoda Citigo).
Killarney and District Motor Club vice-chairman Mike O’Shea was the brainchild behind the KDMC2 Youth Programme.
“The programme has grown legs and these young drivers now have people around them that will encourage them along,” he said. “They will have mentors around for aspects of rallying from the sporting side of it to mechanical.”
The three drivers will compete in the full season of Junior rally events which includes more forest rallies in Tipperary, Cork and Clare and a series of single venue tarmac rallysprints in Tipperary and Cork.
