Caherdaniel man- Michael “Bones” O’Connor makes a return to the driver’s seat this weekend.
Bones last drove competitively in 2016 and competes in the Cork MC 1000 Shakes Night Trial on Saturday night out of Inchigeelagh in West Cork.
He will be joined by fellow old stager- James O’Brien from Dromtariffe, North Cork – renewing a partnership from the 80’s. They will be in Bones old Subaru Impreza, borrowed from Limerick man Greg Shinnors, for the event. Bones says he is not as deaf as Andrew Nesbitt, so James won’t have to shout as loud as he has been used to !
The 1000 Shakes is one of the toughest night trials in the calendar- CoC Nial Murphy is renowned for `testing competitors to their limits, and sometimes beyond. He has laid out a technical 105 mile route, starting at 22.01.
The event is a round of both the National Navigation Trial Championship and the Munster Navigation Trial Championship, with leading competitors in both championships entering.
The 1000 Shakes is Bones lucky event, having won it 13 times with 5 different navigators. However, he is not expecting to add No 14 to that list, given the combined age of navigator, driver and car is 155 years!
