The word Proton is the Greek word for first – the Kerry link to an unusual rally car on this weekend’s Galway International Rally

One of the more unusual cars in this weekend’s Corrib Oil Galway International is Robert Leech’s Proton Satria Super 1600

The Wexford man makes a return to rallying after more than two years away and he will be co-driven by Cordal’s Denny Greaney.

Their last outing in the car was the 2019 Fastnet Rally in Skibbereen where they finished first in Class2.

Prior to that, the car was last seen on the 2017 Wexford Rally.

The Wexford-Kerry team are seeded 133 for this weekend’s two-day event around Loughrea.

Robert’s brother, Killarney based Sam is also on the entry list, running an Opel Corsa with co-driver Barry Attridge.

A second Proton Satria S1600 will be driven by Colin O’Toole and Charlotte Egan and there are also two R5/S2000 versions of the car in action – one in the hands of Stuart Darcy and another by Simon Chapman.
