Kenneth Quirke dedicates his latest US victory to late cousin
Kenneth Quirke has dedicated his second rally victory in the USA to the memory of his late cousin who passed away just days before the event.
The New York-based West Kerry man contested last weekend’s Show Me Rally in Missouri alongside Cork man Johnny O’Sullivan in a Ford Fiesta R5.
It was their second victory together after taking a win on the STPR rally in Pennsylvania in September.
The rally got underway on Friday night with four stages, followed by six tests on Saturday.
The led the rally overnight and controlled the regional event on Saturday.
“That’s two from two for myself and Johnny in the R5 at American Rally Association Regional rounds. Would be awesome to get a good run next year against other R5’s in a couple of National rounds…. If he will bring me,” said Quirke.
“It took us a stage or two to settle in and get going but it certainly didn’t help being first on the road as the stages were very marbly, was very loose and slippery.”
A few days before the rally, his cousin, (Quirke) Neukirchner passed away after a short illness in Cork.
“I’d like to dedicate the win at the Show Me Rally to my dear cousin Anne-Maria who passed away a couple days before the rally, I know she was helping us finish,” added Quirke.
“It was a well organised rally over the two days. Stages for the most part were fast and flowing except for one stage on the Saturday morning, that was tight and technical.
“We had a good lead Friday evening so sat comfortable day two, went for a push on the last stage just to see could we do a good run and have the pace where we should be at, and it worked. Everything clicked and was 32s quicker than our first pass.”
