Wexford Rally with Craig Breen: “Two dreams come true” for Mikie Galvin

Last Sunday’s Wexford Rally for the debut of two historic-spec Subaru Legacy(s) and both cars had strong Kerry links.

World Rally Championship star Craig Breen made a surprise entry in his father Ray’s Legacy.

The newly restored Subaru made its rally debut in Breen Snr’s hands at the RallyLegend demonstration event in San Marino at the start of the month.

Criag, who only days before the Wexford Rally, was confirmed as the M-Sport Ford lead driver for 2022. placed a last-minute entry for the event and duly won the historic section.

Due to the last-minute nature of the entry Paul Nagle was unavailable and he offered the co-driver’s to his Aghadoe neighbour and Killarney and District Motor Club mate Mikie Galvin.

“I got a phone call at 7.40am on Friday morning and was told I had five seconds to make up my mind,” said Galvin who is better known for his work alongside Keith Cronin in the British Rally Championship.

“This was two dreams come true – a chance to sit with Craig and the chance to sit in such a legendary car.”

Alan Ring and his West Cork co-driver Adrian Deasy ran their ex-Ari Vatanen Legacy for the first time in Wexford too.

The car is after a full but and bolt rebuild by Prodrive’s Legend department in England.

Ring was second to Breen in the Historic section of the rally after electrical glitches in the new car caused rear differential problems.

“We had a good event, but we are still learning,” said the Munster Joinery man. “I found the car nervous and we have a lot of testing to do to get it right.”

Ring has entered the forthcoming Kerry Winter Rally (November 7) and the Rentokil Initial Killarney Historic Rally at the end of November.
