Kerry motorsport engineer Richard Browne is heading to this weekend’s World Rallycross in Belgium as an event winner.
Browne, who has been retained by Volkswagen Motorsport to look after the company’s Polo R5 customers and associated paperwork for the FIA.
At the weekend’s he as re-joined his old Rallycross driver Johan Kristofferson who is driving a Audi S1 in the series.
The pair previously worked together when Volkswagen sent Browne to events but now he works directly for the Swedish driver on Rallycross weekends.
Kristofferson won, the last time out , two weeks ago in Riga. It was Browne’s first World Championship win in rallycross although he has won event in the World Rally Championship with Volkswagen.
“Finally got a win. Been a long time coming,” he told Kerry Motorsport News. “The car has been really fast in Barcelona, Loheac and Riga. So the high grip tracks, the car is mega. We had the pace to win in all these four rounds, but something seems to happen each time. We struggle on the low grip tracks, and now towards the end of the season, we go more towards this type of track and conditions, it’s not ideal to be 20 points behind in the championship.”
COVID has disrupted the teams plans too.
“But, we don’t give up. If we can get some new damper curves from KYB in Japan, we can improve the area we know we need to work on, and be competitive again on low grip surfaces. COVID-19 restrictions have prevented the KYB staff from traveling each time in the past unfortunately.”
