Fogarty’s NASCAR engineering success
A Killarney motor racing engineer will be hoping to keep his driver at the top of the National Association for Stock Car Auto Racing (NASCAR) standings in the USA this weekend.
David Fogarty, a nephew of legendary sports commentator, the late Weeshie Fogarty, is a an Aerodynamics Engineer with Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR)in North Carolina.
He also works for Toyota Racing Development (TRD) and JGR runs Toyota Camrys on behalf of the Japanese manufacturer in America’s biggest motor racing series.
“I’m actually affiliated with both TRD and JGR so I work closely with members from both organizations. TRD provides support to JGR in terms of at the track and also through people like myself,” he told the Killarney Advertiser.
The team’s driver Denny Hamlin is leading the NASCAR championship ahead of this Sunday’s
Foxwoods Resort Casino 301 race at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway.
The team’s other driver Kyle Busche won last time out at the Quaker State 400 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway and currently holds third place in the drivers’ championship.
“Joe Gibbs Racing has four drivers right now,” he added. “Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin, Christopher Bell, and Martin Truex Jr. It’s fantastic to be part of such an amazing organisation and to be able to contribute to the drivers success winning races.”
Fogarty has been working for the team, founded by American Football coaching legend Joe Gibbs, since 2012. Gibbs guided the Washington Redskins to three Super Bowl titles and is regarded as one of the sport’s greatest ever coaches.
He set up his motor racing team in 1992 and has won eight NASCAR titles, three since Fogarty joined the squad including Busche’s championship victory last season.
Fogarty has a PhD in Aeronautical Engineering from the University of Limerick and has competed a Post-doctorate Fellowship with American space agency NASA – on helicopter noise prediction.
His role with Joe Gibbs Racing includes the analysis of geometry modifications on vehicle aerodynamic performance, preparing wind tunnel test plans, managing wind tunnel tests and the presentation of results and recommendations for future development.
