Busy times coming for local classic car clubs
The month of August is set to be a very busy month for classic car enthusiasts in Kerry with five separate events set to take place in the county across three different weekends.
In a sign of the times, clubs that have been unable to run events for that last year or more are pressing ahead with runs that were either postponed from earlier in the year or are occupying there traditional date on the calendar.
The first event on the hectic schedule is the Abbeydorney Vintage Rally over the Sunday and Monday of the Bank Holiday weekend.
“This year’s charity that we will be donating to from our Tractor/Car Runs on the August Bank Holiday weekend is Banna Rescue, this is a fantastic service to have on our doorstep. Like all services they are lacking in fundraising, especially with the year we just had. Please come out and support this worthy cause and help this service to continue and keep us safe as we enjoy our wonderful beaches,” said a club statement.
On Sunday, August 8, The Kingdom Veteran, Vintage and Classic Car Club will run its annual Ballymac Vintage Car and Honda 50 run.
In recent years this event ran on a Friday night from O’Riada’ Bar in Ballymac.
“This year will be a bit different to previous, as we will be holding a Cars & Coffee event from 10am – 12pm for all classic and vintage cars and bikes at O’Riada’s , before heading off on the run at 12pm,” said a club statement, “As usual, we will be raising funds for a worthy local cause and we have chosen to support Help Rose Bloom this year.”
The same day, Irish Vintage Scene magazine is hosting a national photo rally in aid of mental health charity Aware.
“Hosted by Irish Vintage Scene with the support of FBD Insurance, and supporting Aware (€2 of every €10 registration fee), we hope that this unique event will promote the benefits of the old vehicle and restoration hobby as a way of coping and dealing with mental health issues, particularly stress, anxiety and those arising from loneliness and a lack of social outlets, while also promoting the support services that are now more valuable than ever following our recent restrictions on travel and social interactions,” said the organisers.
“To ensure that all enthusiasts can support this initiative, we’ve selected a number of routes around the island, so there’s sure to be one that’s convenient for you. Each route will feature a branded centre-point where participating cars will be photographed as they pass, and later published on http://www.irishvintagescene.ie as well as our social media pages. A shorter way to put it would be: “Let’s all go for a spin and have some fun!”
Listowel town centre has been selected by the magazine as its Kerry photo location. More details on
A week later Ted’s Opel Vauxhall Run will take place on Saturday August 14.
It will be based at the The Mills Inn, Ballyvourney but will visit famous rally stages and locations like Loo Bridge, Kilgarvan, Glengarriff, Kenmare, Top of Coom roads such as Borlin, The Healy Pass, Killmackillogue and Furihy.
“As always we continue our association with the Dogs For the Disabled, a very worthwhile Charity. The difference that these dogs make to some people’s lives is unmeasurable and they receive no Government funding,” said Ted.
Later that day the Churchill Vintage Society will run its annual road run from Churchill, via Kerry Head, a long running event (and one of the very few that ran last season). This event is organised by local rally driver Brendan Brosnan and road-legal rally cars are welcome to enter.
Of course it goes without saying, that all events are subject to COVID-19 guidelines at the time of the event , and all attending are asked to please follow these guidelines.
There maybe more events on and if you or your club has an event planed send an email to firstname.lastname@example.org and we will promote it.
