Killarney and District Motor is mourning following the sudden passing of club stalwart Mike Falvey.

Mike passed away on Thursday night following a brief illness.

The Beaufort-based Falvey family is steeped in Killarney and District Motor Club activities.

Brothers Diarmuid and Donal are well-known and accomplished rally co-drivers while another brother John works for Dermot Healy Car Sales in Killarney.

Mike was best known for his behind the scenes work and was one of those tireless workers who did so many thankless and off the radar jobs to get the likes of the Rally of the Lakes and Killarney Historic Rally off the ground.

Once an event was up and running Mike could be relied on the keep the rally going and was a long-time member of the ‘on-the-road’ crew for both local rallies.

Mike was central part to the running of the Shanara stage, as a local he took time to visit his neighbours and discuss road closure concerns with them ahead of any use of roads in this area.

He also negotiated with local farmers and took charge of the placing of bales for safety chicanes along the stage.

It is fair to say that, in recent years, any stage in the Beaufort area would not have ran without his input, advice and experience.

Mike’s passing is the second blow to the club following the passing of Johnny Hickey at the end of April.

“Another huge shock to the club,” said chairman Diarmuid Cronin, “Mike was a tremendous hard-worker and you could depend on him day or night. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”

Michael (Mike) the much-loved father of Chloe and beloved son of Jerry and the late Noreen. Sadly missed by his partner Tanya, brothers John, Diarmuid and Donal, sisters-in-law Siobhán, Máiread and Kelly, nieces, nephew, aunts, cousins, neighbours and many close friends.

Funeral details will be released in due course.
