World Championship opportunity for Kevin Coyne

World Championship opportunity for Kevin Coyne

Kevin Coyne will race alongside the stars of the Superbike World Championship in July as a result of newly configured British Superbike Championship calendar.

The Farranfore-based racer is stepping up to the National Superstock 600cc class this season after a year in the British Junior Supersport class.

Coyne’s entry for the 2021 season was accepted by series organisers last week and that is when series organisers informed him that there was going to be changes to the original calendar.

The BSB was originally set to get underway in late May but continuing COVID-19 problems in the UK means that season start is now delayed until June 27. The 18 round series will now be run over 11 race weekends with each meeting offering three points-scoring opportunities for the main class.

There is not enough room on the timetable for each of the support classes and BSB organisers set out to find alternative dates for the various classes.

As a result one of Coyne’s National Superstock 600cc rounds will now take place as part of the support bill for the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship at Donington Park on July 4.

The local teenager will share paddock space with some of the biggest names in World Superbike Racing including Northern Ireland’s Jonathan Rea who will be searching for a seventh successive world title this season.

“It is hard to believe that we are going to racing alongside the likes of Jonathan Rea,” his father Mark said.

“It is a great opportunity, to show what he can do in from of people like that. And at Donington too, it is a track he likes.”
