Falvey family lead the Kerry entry on Déjà Vu 2021 road run

Four members of one local motorsport family are among the many Kerry enthusiasts who  have entered  the classic rally event ‘Déjà Vu Ireland West’.

This year’s running of the popular retro-style event will be based in Westport, County Mayo and will run on the weekend of September 17 and 18 – pandemic restrictions permitting.

‘Déjà Vu’ is a series of non-competitive motoring events, run over many of the famous special sections that have been used on the Circuit of Ireland, Donegal International Rally, the Ulster Rally , Galway International Rally , Cork  ‘20’ International Rally and The Rally of Lakes.

Competitors enter in period rally cars or cars of historical importance and very often, during the runs, famous rally drivers are reunited with machines from their past careers.

Déjà Vu began life in Killarney in 2016 when the event celebrated the glory days of the Circuit of Ireland between 1936 and 1983.

It returned to Killarney the following year to celebrate  the early years of the Rally of the Lakes and has since remembered the Ulster International Rally and the Donegal International Rally.

Over the years the event has raised nearly  €175,000 euro for local and national charities.

This year’s ‘Déjà Vu’ will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Galway International Rally by visiting famous roads in Connemara and Mayo including the Partry Hills, Lough Nafooey, Derryrush, Roundstone and Ballynahinch Lake.

Four members of the Falvey family, who appropriately live near the classic Gortnagane stage, in Rathmore, have entered.

Conor Falvey leads the charge in his replica  Porsche 911 Carrera RS 3.0 and  his co-driver for the weekend is his wife Catherine.

Their two sons Robert and Mark have also entered a Ford Escort Mk2. Mark is no stranger to Historic rallying success and is a past winner of both the Killarney Historic Rally and the historic section of the Rally of the Lakes.

Robert is usually found in the service park helping his brother and father, his cousin Peter and his uncle Todd but September’s run will be his first time driving on an event.

The brothers will take part in Robert’s newly built Escort .

The new car, a lockdown project by the Falvey family, will carry Eaton Yale livery made famous by former World Champion Hannu Mikkola. It also sports a locally famous registration plate – 314 MYI.

“The car is all dressed up, with nowhere to go until now,” said Conor. “The reg is well-known in these parts, Barry Duggan drove it to fifth on the 1984 Rally of the Lakes, it then went to the Randles brothers, the late Con used it to great acclaim before David took it over, they sold it to Dan Brosnan in Fenit. It eventually found its way to the Falvey family.”

Killarney and District Motor Club member John Daly has entered his Ford Escort Cosworth. The Listowel man will be joined by Dan Halpin.

Tralee’s Pat Slattery has restored a Subaru Impreza  and will be joined by his girlfriend Sandra Dillion who will be taking part in her first motorsport event.

Local Mini enthusiasts Aaron Fleming (Killarney) and Alan McGough (Beaufort) are also on the entry list.
