TG4 to broadcast F1 in Schools finals – Kerry interest in national STEM competition

F1 in Schools 

TG4 has announced that it will live broadcast the finals of the F1 in Schools project on May 23. Two teams representing St Brigid’s Secondary School in Killarney are vying for a place in the final. 

The school has entered two teams in the nationwide competition that encourages STEM education through the design and build of a real-live scale-model racing car.

The students on Team Vroom Racing, pictured above, are Ilona Sheehan, Kayla Byrne, Grace Daly and Ella Galvin. The have attracted supported from Formula Female, a national organisation that promotes women in motorsport.

Representing Team Mario Kart are Alanna Brady, Kate Donoghue, Meadhbh Bennett and Abbie Daly.

“Amazing news arrived in the form of the final being broadcast on TG4. However, all our work will be submitted well before this so the pressure is on,” Team Vroom’s leader Ilona Sheehan told the Killarney Advertiser.

“Things are really coming together now. We’ve submitted our portfolios for the mock regional finals and should  be getting some feedback soon. We’ll apply this to try and improve our portfolios for the National Finals on the week of the 19 to 23 of April.

Last week we submitted our car files so that we can use the F1 in Schools partner to manufacture our car for the final. They will send all the pieces to us so we can put it together and send it off to them before the deadline of the of April 5.”
