Only one* Kerryman in the whole world rallying this weekend – *to the best of our knowledge!
There may be not be any motorsport in Ireland this weekend, and rightly so, but Kerry folk are scattered all over the world and we had to look as far as New Zealand to find a Kerry rally competitor in action.
This weekend should have been one of the biggest in this year’s Irish rallying calendar but the already well documented sporting restrictions intervened.
The traditional St Patrick’s weekend West Cork Rally was one of the first events fall to the new and unprecedented restrictions announced on Thursday by the Irish government.
Over 160 crews from all over Ireland and the UK were due to tackle the iconic event and a large portion of them were from Kerry.
It looked certain that no one from The Kingdom would see the inside of a rally car this weekend…
Step forward Noel Moloney who is originally from Duagh in the north of the county.
He has been a regular part of the New Zealand rally scene since he emigrated there a few years ago and has been co-driving for several Kiwi, Irish and Welsh drivers in the furthest point away from his Kerry roots.
On Sunday he will contest the Bothwell Loop Rallysprint alongside rising New Zealand Rally star Bryn Jones in a Ford Fiesta.
The event is round three of the Northern Rallysprint Series and according to event organisers: ”The narrow flowing back country roads of Glen Murray will test drivers as part of this iconic series.”
Kerry Motorsport News will have a full report on how Noel fares early next week.
