The last time County Kerry hosted a forestry rally was way back in 2007.
That year’s Killarney Forestry Rally which was based in the Malton (now the Killarney Great Southern) Hotel was a round of the Irish Forestry and the British National Gravel Rally championships.
Stages were in the Castleisland region, Mount Eagle for example, and the event was won by Stephen Moore in a Ford Focus while Marcus Dodd was the top UK drivers in second in a Hyundai Accent.
The current lack of locally organised forestry event does not mean that Kerry rally drivers and fans should be without their gravel rally fix.
There are several events over the next few weeks that will keep fan of loose surface rallying busy and they won’t have to travel too far either.
First up is Saturday night’s Moonraker Forestry Rally launch at the Abbey Hotel in Ballyvourney. Munster Car Club, under clerk of the course Ger Seaman, will release details of its March 28 rally which will be based in the same village just across the county bounds.
Keeping with the county bounds theme, Limerick Motor Club will host its annual forestry rally on March 1. This event is based in Abbeyfeale and will visit stages near Brosna and Rockchapel.
Keep and eye on Kerry Motorsport News for details of both events.
