Rearview mirror – look back at the entry list from the 2002 Killarney Historic Rally

A rare document was uncovered last week by KDMC club member David Leslie.
He found the entry list for the 2002 Killarney Historic Rally in his garage while preparing for this year’s event.
David was on that entey list all of two decades ago so we decided to compare the 20-year old list with this year’s list to get an idea of some of the drivers and co-drivers still competing today.
Les Allfrey, from Warwickshire is the only driver to appear on both entry lists in the historic section of the rally. He returns this year in a Mini Cooper S.
Paul Mankin and Peter Scott were not on the entry list 20 years ago but they are this time around in the same Lotus Elan
In the Classic section Paul Nagle was on co-driving duty for Donie O’Sullivan, the same driver who gave him his WRC debut three year later. They were the fourth seeds for what is now known as the Modified Rally.
Interestingly, Paul’s brother Alan was co-driving for Donal O’Connor in the historic section!
Local driver David Slattery is also on both entry lists. As is Kevin O’Donoghue.
Thomas Randles is there too and his co-driver of 20 years Diarmuid Lynch is along side Mark Falvey in the historic rally this time out.
Paudie O’Callaghan is also a double entry. John Hickey… did he ever miss a Killarney rally?
County Clare’s Keith Naughton has entered every Killarney Historic Rally so , naturally, his name is published twice too.
Donegal’s Martin McGee was seeded way down at 112 in 2001 but he is considered one of the front runners this year.
