New co-driving initiative launched by Motorsport Ireland

A new initiative to find the next generation of navigators has been launched by Motorsport Ireland, with an introductory session set for the Four Seasons Hotel in Monaghan on April 10. Led by the Women in Motorsport Commission in collaboration with the Rallies Commission and the MI Rally Academy, the programme is open to both men and women over the age of 18.

The project is designed to be delivered by co-drivers, for co-drivers, featuring a line-up of highly skilled competitors and champions as facilitators. While the first session acts as a foundational introduction, it carries a specific focus on the essential skills required for night navigation and endurance trials. Topics on the night will include road book and tulip diagram interpretation, map reading, plotting skills, and the critical role a co-driver plays in the car. It will also cover basic scrutiny and safety requirements, such as the correct fitment of belts and helmets.

This opening session is aimed at complete newcomers who have had limited opportunities to get involved in the sport, as well as existing navigators who want to strengthen their grasp of the fundamental principles. The evening runs from 5:00pm to 9:30pm and costs €10 per person, which includes a co-driver pack on arrival.

Participants can take part in individual sessions as they stand alone, and details of a second follow-up event will be released once the Monaghan session is completed. Registration links and further promotional details are expected to be shared on social media shortly. For any immediate questions, contact Kelsey Kirby at kelsey.kirby@motorsportireland.com.
