Extreme Day Trip: Kerry to the Brussels Motor Show and back in 24 hours

Covering the Brussels Motor Show in person meant a long but worthwhile day on the road for Kerry Motorsport News, with travel starting and finishing after midnight in a 24 hour window.

The journey began at 00:15 on Sunday, January 11, with the Aircoach departing Farranfore for Dublin Airport.

Arrival at the airport was just after 4:00am, allowing enough time to check in and clear security ahead of the 6:20am flight to Brussels Zaventem.

The early start was essential to make the most of the day at one of Europe’s key motor shows.

Landing in Brussels shortly after 9:00am local time, travel continued by metro and train before making the short connection to Heysel, home of the Brussels Expo complex.

Arrival at the show was around 10:00am, with several hours spent covering manufacturer launches, new models and motorsport-linked displays.

The Brussels Motor Show remains an important fixture on the European calendar, offering access to world premieres and technology relevant to both road and competition vehicles. Highlights from the show are covered in a separate reports on this website and our social media channels

Departure from the show was around 3:00pm to allow time for the return journey to Zaventem which included a lunch stop and a catch up with my Brussels-based sister near Gare Midi.

The flight back to Dublin left at 17:20, and despite a cross wind landed at around 18:30.

With the clocks having gone back one hour, there was a short wait before catching the 21:00

Aircoach service back to Kerry. The final leg arrived in Farranfore at 00:30, just 15 minutes over the 24 hours since departure.

Tip for anyone attempting a similar trip: bring a small pillow or cushion in your day bag. Sleep on buses and planes is limited, and every bit of comfort helps on a tight turnaround.
