Volunteers praised for keeping Killarney Historic Rally running in tough conditions

The unsung heroes of last weekend’s Towers Hotel Killarney Historic Rally were the volunteer marshals who kept the event moving despite some of the most difficult conditions seen on the rally in years.

Around 300 volunteers, representing clubs from all over the country — including some who travelled from as far away as Donegal Motor Club — were on duty from early morning until late at night.

Saturday began with heavy rain, and it would have been easy for anyone to look out the window and stay at home. Instead, hundreds turned out to ensure every stage could run safely.

A special mention goes to Kerry Motor Club, who managed the runs over Moll’s Gap. Their day started with a 5am briefing and did not finish until after 9pm, when the last of the volunteers returned to Killarney. It was a long shift on one of the most high-profile stages in the country. Running a night stage is never easy.

Across all nine stages, there were incidents and delays, but none were due to the efforts of organisers or marshals. Their work ensured the rally remained safe for crews and spectators.

To everyone who stood out in the rain, managed junctions, controlled spectators, and kept the rally going — Kerry Motorsport News salutes you and thanks you.

A big shout-out also to Chief Marshal Marie O’Donoghue, who coordinated the entire volunteer team across the weekend and ensured every position was staffed.
