Kerry competitors lead the way in new J1000 Challenge Trophy

Three young Kerry drivers are already in line for Craig Breen Foundation support in 2026 after dominating the new J1000 Challenge Trophy for 2025.

The championship was won by Sam Gorman, a Donegal man who studies in Tralee. Gorman, partnered by local co-driver Niall Myers, in a Nissan Micra J1000.

Second place went to Firies driver Frank Wharton, co-driven by Denny Greany from Castleisland in a Toyota Aygo.

Third place went to David Slattery Jr from Glenflesk, with Ger Somers of Headford on the notes in a Hyundai i10.

The J1000 Challenge Trophy is open to Class 21 competitors driving non-Volkswagen Group cars, including the Toyota Aygo, Peugeot 107, Citroën C1, Nissan Micra and Hyundai i10. The trophy will be awarded at the end of the season to the highest-placed eligible driver who does not finish in the overall top three of the championship.

The three drivers will learn their award – from the Craig Bren Foundation – at Saturday night’s Irish Forest Rally Championship awards do in Sligo
