John Hickey’s Fubaru – A Marvel of Engineering  like the Great Wall of China or the International Space Station

Local rally driver and legendary engineer John Hickey is never far from a good idea or a good story.

His self-built ‘Fubaru’ a Ford Escort body running Subaru gear is already part of Kerry rally folklore.

Hickey himself puts it on the same scale as the Great Wall of China and the International Space Station and describes it as “a marvel of engineering.”

Ever passionate about the sport, Hickey recently texted Kerry Motorsport News about a few issues bothering him with upcoming rules and regulations.

That debate is for another day.

But, true to form, the conversation quickly turned to his beloved Fubaru.

He wondered aloud why his pride and joy wasn’t on the entry list for the Rally Masters at Killarney Racecourse.

The Rally Masters Ireland event will celebrate iconic rally cars from the 1980s, 90s, and 2000s. and from the outset the organisers were always clear on what cars could participate.

“I just can’t understand why this marvel of engineering isn’t invited to Killarney Racecourse. It’s just crazy!!!” he wrote.

Then, in classic Hickey fashion, he backtracked slightly but only to make sure he was using the right words.

“When I wrote ‘marvel of engineering,’ I Googled it afterwards to check the terminology. It was exactly what I wanted it to be – to support my claim 🤣,” he explained.

One thing is certain: whether he’s flagging rule changes or defending his Fubaru’s greatness, any chat with John Hickey is guaranteed to be as entertaining and inventive as the car itself.
