Rally Masters Killarney set for emotional reunion

It is now 25 days until Rally Masters Killarney takes place at Killarney Racecourse on September 27, and each day Kerry Motorsport News will bring you details of drivers and cars confirmed for the event.

One of the most remarkable stories involves Swedish rally star Kalle Grundel and co-driver Benny Melander, who competed on the 1986 Circuit of Ireland Rally in a Ford RS200.

During that event, their car struck a young spectator after two boys ran onto the road.

The incident, captured in well-known television helicopter footage, left the youngster with chest and leg injuries but, thankfully, he survived.

Nearly four decades later, both Grundel and the now-grown man involved in that frightening incident will meet for the first time and it will happen at Rally Masters Killarney.

An RS200 will also be part of the reunion, bringing an extraordinary chapter of rallying history the full circle.

Tickets for Rally Masters are selling fast, with over two-thirds already sold. The event will support two charities:  The Jack & Jill Foundation and LauraLynn Children’s Hospice.
