Countdown to Rally Masters Ireland

Countdown to Rally Masters Ireland

Preparations for Rally Masters Ireland, the brand-new rally demonstration at Killarney Racecourse on Saturday, September 27 are ramping up this week.

Rally Masters Ireland is a non-competitive, stage-style showcase event for some of the most iconic rally cars and drivers from the past four decades.

It is organised by Killarney and District Motor Club, co-promoted by Motorsport Ireland, and supported by Kingfisher Insurance.

The event will feature 50 iconic rally cars and 50 legendary drivers, running in a demonstration format on a purpose-built stage at the racecourse.

This is the first time in over two decades that a special stage of any kind will run at the Killarney Racecourse.

The venue last featured competitively in 2004, and this year’s event also marks 20 years since Colin McRae drove his Ford Escort Mk2 as course car on the 2005 Rally of the Lakes.

The Ford Focus World Rally that McRae used in Wales Rally GB in 2001 has been fully restored and will be in Ireland for the first time next month.

A Subaru Impreza that the famous Scotsman used to win the 1997 RAC Rally is also confirmed but the drivers of each car have yet to be revealed.

The event will raise funds for two Irish children’s charities: The Jack and Jill Foundation and Laura Lynn Children’s Hospice.

The organisers have confirmed the first entries: a trio of MG Metro 6R4s, reunited with three Irish rally legends.

Frank O’Mahoney, Denis Biggerstaff, and Willie O’Dwyer will return to the driver’s seat of the exact cars they rallied in the 1990s and early 2000s. This is the first time these three  6R4s have appeared at the same event and possibly ever.

Donegal rally legend James Cullen is also among the confirmed drivers and he is set to be reunited with a Nissan 240RS, a car he drove in the late 1980s.

From now until rally day, a new car and driver combinations will be revealed daily across social media platforms and local and motorsport press.

Expect Group B machinery, Group A legends, early WRC icons, and a few surprises.
