MARY O’CARROLL ON HER SON ANTHONY’S STRUGGLE FOR REHABILITATION
The mother of Anthony O’Carroll (28), who was injured during the Southern 100 Road Races on the Isle of Man in July last year has written to politicians pleading for assistance to help her son.

Here is the letter
MARY O’CARROLL ON HER SON ANTHONY’S STRUGGLE FOR REHABILITATION
My name is Mary O’Carroll, and I am the mother of Anthony O’Carroll. I’m writing this as a desperate plea for help and attention to my son’s situation at the National Rehabilitation Hospital (NRH).
Over the past three weeks, Anthony’s rehabilitation has come to a near standstill due to a severe shortage of therapists. What was supposed to be a place of progress and healing has, sadly, become little more than a long-term care facility for my son. The heart of rehabilitation – consistent and focused therapy – is not happening. Therapists are being constantly rotated, their numbers stretched to breaking point. As a result, Anthony has only a few therapy sessions scheduled, and even those are often cancelled without warning. This is not rehabilitation. This is stagnation. And for someone like Anthony, who desperately needs structured, continuous support to recover, this situation is heartbreaking. I feel deeply frustrated, disappointed, and increasingly hopeless – not just with the NRH, but with the HSE as a whole. The dedicated staff who are still here are doing their best, but they are clearly overwhelmed, overworked, and burned out. I hear the same thing from them as I experience myself – the system is failing our loved ones.
I am asking – as a mother – for urgent action. My son deserves a chance at recovery. All patients at the NRH do. Please, don’t let this go unheard.
Sincerely,
Mary O’Carroll
